About the Play
Called “hilarious” by Wired, Truth Values: One Girl's Romp Through M.I.T.'s Male Math Maze is also a serious exploration of the world of elite mathematics and the challenges faced by women in STEM fields. The story follows Gioia’s adventures as a math Ph.D. student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Bewitched by the formal mathematical notion of Truth, she struggles with the clash of her personal reality in a world that is not binary.
The play features writer/performer and "recovering mathematician” Gioia De Cari creating “refreshing delights of humor, even compassion” (EDGE Media), charmingly bringing to life more than 30 characters, “each rendered on an empty stage that hints at the countless stories similar to hers but untold” (TimeOut New York).
Truth Values premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival, winning a FringeNYC Overall Excellence Award for Best Solo Show. Development of the play included extensive work both in the studio of the celebrated solo show director and acting coach Wynn Handman and in Matt Hoverman's Go-Solo Workshop. The play received its regional premiere at the Central Square Theater in Cambridge, MA, where it sold out its run and was nominated for an IRNE award. Truth Values has continued to tour to more than 50 theaters, universities and performing arts centers throughout the United States, including sold-out shows at the La Jolla Playhouse Potiker Theatre, The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, USC’s Visions and Voices Arts and Humanities Series, The Barclay, The Lied Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre in NYC, San Francisco's Zeum Theatre and many others.
In academic and corporate settings, Truth Values has been embraced as a conversation catalyst about gender equity and diversity issues, particularly the continuing underrepresentation of women in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math).
